VÉRITÉ has come a long way since waiting tables in Times Square. Three years ago, the Orange County product, born Kelsey Byrne, was independently financing her budding music career with double shifts at Applebee’s. Thankfully, she has closed-out that tab and now VÉRITÉ has become one of the hottest names in alternative pop. With over 1.7 million monthly listeners and more than 100 million streams on Spotify, this blossoming star is currently touring the US and remains just as independent as ever.
Byrne debuted as VÉRITÉ in 2014 with her DIY single, “Heartbeat”, which quickly went viral and left record labels waiting to be seated. The hardworking songstress chose to continue waitressing and fund the release of her debut EP Echo with her Applebee’s tips. “I decided that I didn’t want to answer to anybody or change anything to appease someone else,” says VÉRITÉ.
In 2015, the same year she released her sophomore EP Sentiment, Byrne quit her waitressing job to pursue music full-time just before heading out on her first-ever tour. Since then she has completed two North American headline tours and released her highly acclaimed third EP, 2016’s Living. She’s also opened for such artists as Tove Lo and BØRNS and appeared at major festivals like Lollapalooza and Firefly, plus made her television debut on the TODAY Show.
This past June, VÉRITÉ made her full-length debut with Somewhere in Between, a moody mélange of emotive empowerment hypnotically draped over brooding electronica that lingers ‘somewhere in between’ Halsey and Lana Del Ray. At the heart of the album is a selection of songs that “dissect fragments of my experience as a human and twists them in unusual ways,” according to VÉRITÉ. “I like playing with the sentiment of human relationships” she adds, “but the lyrics are more about my relationship with the world, and dealing with things like apathy and boredom.”
Well, apathy and boredom still may persist. However, finding fans shouldn’t be an issue for the exotic soprano. VÉRITÉ is currently headlining a fall tour in support of Somewhere in Between and will be visiting Stubb’s in Austin with Tigertown on September 15. “Now I get to go back and experience the album live and reinterpret and re-imagine the things I may have done differently,” she claims. Well, whatever she’s been doing, it’s been working. You can catch VÉRITÉ at the stops below.
