Black Moon Rising Over C-Boys With Black Pumas

During the month of March, the swankiest club on South Congress has been home to the hottest new band in Austin. And with just a single show remaining on the calendar, you only have one more chance to catch Black Pumas at their C-Boys Heart and Soul residency with Los Coast.

The psychedelic soul sextet led by Grammy-award winning musician/producer Adrian Quesada (Brownout, Third Root & Grupo Fantasma) and passionately funky frontman Eric Burton debuted at the south Austin juke-joint in February and have taken the city by storm ever since…thanks in large part to their huge, seven-show SXSW breakout which included a headlining gig at the 50+ act ‘All The Friends Ball’. In less than two months the Black Pumas have become the most sought after live performers in Austin and with a highly anticipated debut album right around the corner, the band is destined for a gigantic 2018.

I arrived at C-Boys last Thursday an hour ahead of the Black Pumas’ 10:00pm set time and was greeted by a ‘mile-long’ line of fans eagerly waiting to see the band. Once inside the venue, it immediately became clear this was no ordinary Thursday night show in The Live Music Capital. The Black Pumas’ guest list at C-Boys consisted of a “who’s, who” of Austin blues, soul and sonic honey singer-songwriters eager to catch one of the best shows in town. Even a Grammy-award winning Chosen One stopped in to witness the “Black Moon Rising” over C-Boys. And the Black Pumas most certainly did not disappoint the jam-packed crowd as swagger-filled frontman Burton belted out infectiously uplifting, dance-inducing grooves over Quesada’s wailing, psychedelic guitar fuzz. The band rocked through an hour-long set of hypnotic harmonies and rich, righteous soul that never once dipped or settled. Each track felt tailor-made for the specific crowd and venue with personalized lyrics, vocal outbursts and strapping solos. The Black Pumas literally scorched the soul out of C-Boys with their performance Thursday night and the venue may not recover until it’s time to do it all over again with the band’s final blowout this Thursday. DO NOT MISS IT!
