ALL ATX Back to the Armadillo Benefit Concert Recap

Auditorium Shores in downtown Austin was packed Sunday for a day full of local music and giving back to several charities benefiting local musicians. One of Austin’s most noble nonprofits, All ATX put together an incredible lineup to benefit the Health Alliance for Austin Musicians (HAAM), The SIMS Foundation, and Austin Music Foundation that are all dedicated to healthcare and income assistance for musicians.

The lineup headlined by Creedence Clearwater Revival frontman John Fogerty, featured several of Austin’s local favorites from Austin Music Awards ‘Best New Artist’ winner Jane Ellen Bryant to Texas Country star Jack Ingram. Each artist is featured on the 2017 edition of the ALL ATX compilation CD featuring covers of some of the greatest musicians to ever play the legendary former music venue, Armadillo World Headquarters.

Although sets were short, every artist came out and put on their best performance for the cause. Bastrop blues act The Peterson Brothers wowed the audience as they played one long jam session for the duration of their set. The guitar and bass duo’s sound was more like Austin in 1985 rather than 2017 with a guitar solos that would make Stevie Ray Vaughn proud. If you haven’t seen them live, you can catch them every Monday night at the Continental Club.

Later in the evening is when some of Texas’ most notorious acts came out to play with performances from 90’s rockers Fastball along with couple Kelly Willis and Bruce Robison. Followed by a set from Jack Ingram with Bruce Robison on guitar who came out to Willie Nelson and Leon Russell’s famous hit “A Song For You”. Seeing two Lonestar legends playing together in the capital city made you proud to be a Texan, and if you’re not, there seems to be plenty of people from all over rushing to sign up.

Austin’s patron saint, Shakey Graves took the stage for an intimate set with great comedic excerpts in between songs. A lone performance without any other band members, Shakey still managed to give the crowd an energetic performance showcasing his many talents.

The night concluded with a set from legend John Fogerty to cap off a day full of great music and local talent. The best part of the day was seeing that every musician was ecstatic to be playing before a hometown crowd in the heart of the city. This all shows you why Austin is such a special place and without a doubt the Live Music Capital of the world.

Ghostland Observatory w/ Night Drive at Stubb’s Photo Recap

Ghostland Observatory’s entire approach to music – sonically, aesthetically, conceptually – is essentially a melding of the two distinctly different personalities of its two members, Thomas Ross Turner and Aaron Behrens. Whereas Turner, the producer/drummer/keyboardist of the duo, finds solace in the minimal, bleak cable-patch squawks of Karlheinz Stockhausen and the analog-disco-thump of Giorgio Moroder, Behrens’ interests lie more along the lines of psychedelia, rock and various country and blues artists.

The result is a shimmering, pulsing pop music that is at once kinetically alive with Behrens’ striking vocals and driving guitar work but also anchored firmly by Turner’s percussive beats and Moog-generated melodies and hooks. Common descriptions include “electro-dance rock,” “synth-funk” and “Freddie Mercury-helms-Daft Punk.”

Deciding to produce a style of music that as yet existed only in their collective consciousnesses; Behrens and Turner formed Ghostland Observatory in Austin in 2003 and haven’t looked back since. They now sell out prominent venues across the country, have played at Lollapalooza, Bonaroo, Coachella and the Austin City Limits music festival, which they headlined, and continue to play at various music festivals and venues around the globe to an ever increasing fan base, thanks to their now-famous live shows.

Last weekend, Ghostland Observatory blasted Stubb’s with their pulsating laser light show notorious for giving photographers fits while invigorating the crowd with savage energy. Austin-based synth-pop duo, Night Drive, opened the evening with flourish of sci-fi inspired cinematic soundscapes. Night Drive creates modern synth-pop that explores the darker currents of abstract emotion. Infectious melodies wrapped in thoughtful lyrics with pulsing dance beats unveil a stylish, energetic sound that has been featured in film, tv and radio around the world.
